Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 10:45 am NEW BOOK (RUS)

Heart rhythm research remains a narrow field with limited applications despite a wide distribution of electrocardiography methods in practical medicine and medical research. Suggested cardiorhythm related study in close relation with mental processes study allows an expanding concept of the heart rhythm information content. Mental processes and heart rhythm are considered as related processes influencing/determining behavior. A special accent was made on time-scale of described phenomena. This monograph is based on the author’s research and the newest observations of scientists from different fields. The proposed study focuses on separate elements of complex problems, for example, diagnostics and treatment of various depression-disorders based on new roles of the cardiorhythm. The discussed concept could be applied in sport-related medicine, teaching and psychology as well as in the general improvement of human performance area. The simple style of the monograph does not require special knowledge from the reader and makes it useful for a wide range of researchers in areas of physiology, psychology, psychiatry, neurology and cardiology.

Nov. 14th, 2009 @ 01:34 pm worthwhile venture
I've needed a new backpack for weeks, as I'd tried to tote a sealed bottle of 3-in-1 oil which broke in the bag, after which the contents saturated the fabric of the backpack. The odor, intense the first handful of days, has dissipated but is still present. Also, if anything were to topple from any other container into the bottom of the bag, it would get contaminated (see my individually wrapped peppermints--the oil permeated the cellophane each was in).

So my dad gave me a ten-spot for a replacement. I'd told him I was planning to visit Kiwanis, a thrift store in AA. However, I didn't have directions and the library wasn't to open today until noon. So I changed my plans and headed to ValuWorld, a place I'd never really been but had heard about a lot (particularly from [info]sarahmichigan).

At first, I wasn't sure if they even carried backpacks, but the store was enormous and thus invited one to windowshop, so I strolled through the aisles, stopping first at the bookshelves (of course). I picked up three paperback volumes (one of which was of poems), each $.60 or less. That's not much, I thought. Onto other aisles.

Eventually, I discovered the store did carry backpacks. In fact, there were a slew of backpacks, most at incredibly reasonable rates. I bought not one but two packs, the total for both coming in at under $4.00. Both are in great shape; one even has a spot at the top for earbuds (stemming from a pouch for portable music, which is too small for my Walkman).

I still had money to spend, so I cruised some more. I picked up two hats and a sleeveless red-plaid dress. This brought my entire total past $10.00, but I had enough for the difference.

All told, I spent less than $14 for eight items. I'll have to visit the store again when I return to purchasing professional clothes.

I am desperate for research information and i hope someone here can pinpoint me in the right direction. I'm currently working on two research papers, one on the effectiveness of play therapy in improving the social interaction of chilren with autism, and another on group work vs individual work in an organisation, particulary in reference to formation, group norms, social facilitation and social loafing. My tutor wont allow me to use information from textbooks and i was wondering if anyone knows of any journals, articles or research papers on either of these topics. It would be a massive help. Even if you just know the researchers or study name. It would be hugely appreciated. Thanks.

Nov. 13th, 2009 @ 11:20 pm Changed journal style - thoughts? + workplace bullying
The tags page was annoying me so I changed the journal style - I hope you guys don't mind. If anyone has a better suggestion, let's hear it!

[I suppose this one spoke to me since it's called "Starry Night.]

Also, how does one get rid of the fucking "search" feature on the left hand side? Unless anyone particularly wants it there, do any of the other mods want to get rid of that?

Finally:

Workplace Bullying is Associated with Sleep Disturbances

A study in the Sept.1 issue of the journal SLEEP shows that current or past exposure to workplace bullying is associated with increased sleep disturbances. Associations also were found between observed bullying and sleep disruption, indicating that bullying has detrimental effects even when it is experienced indirectly.

The study shows a high prevalence of workplace bullying, with 11 percent of women and nine percent of men experiencing “hostile behavior” in the work environment at least weekly and for at least six months during the previous 12 months. After adjustment for covariates such as age, occupation, weekly work hours and depressive symptoms, exposure to bullying was significantly associated with self-reported sleep disturbances. The adjusted odds ratio of having disturbed sleep was more than two times higher in men who currently were experiencing workplace bullying (OR=2.29) or had been exposed to daily or almost daily bullying (OR=2.39); women were nearly two times more likely to report having sleep disturbances if they had experienced daily or almost daily bullying (OR=1.73) or had been exposed to bullying for more than five years (OR=1.87).

[info]brownkitty posted this morning a link to My Life Is Average, a site that allows passersby to submit small scenes from tiny oddball portions of their daily life to prove, once again, that the Mean and the Mode are two ENTIRELY different concepts to people who aren't even necessarily mathematicians.

Lots of high schoolers and college kids abounding, not unexpectedly. Still, it's good to appreciate the girl who understands that the way to really attract a proper man is not necessarily through batted eyelashes and a hint of cleavage. See Example:

"On Halloween, out of all the maids, Little Red Riding Hoods, lingerie models and hot nurses at the Halloween party, the most popular girl was the one dressed as a giant piece of bacon, passing out bacon, with a sign on her back that said, 'You know you want me'."

EDIT: Thanks to MLIA I now have a new task for whenever I go back to school or work for someone where I have to write essays. I shall place the word "Waldo" once in every page of every paper I write.

I was cruising the free demos available on Steam, and up came Zombie Bowl-O-Rama! With a promise like that, how could I not grab it?

Yes. You are fighting the evil zombie swarm who are invading the bowling alley by holding a BOWLING COMPETITION. Knock down all ten Zombies, get a strike! The Zombie computer player even gets to roll a Zombie head as a bowling ball.

There are tricks and treats you pick up along the lane, and you can steer the ball, so it's less a game of amazing skill and more a game of "Screw your Neighbor." But who doesn't love that kind of game once in a while? ... Of course I eat my words as soon as the Zombies hand over the Zombi-nator triple stack of random threats, which in this case widens the gutters, makes all the Zombie pins go in formation of three single file lines, and turns my ball into a cabbage that barely knocks down the front pin.

Not bad for the ten-dollar game market.
